NRS Relief rapidly responds to Ethiopia’s displacement crisis
At least one million internally displaced persons (IDPs), the majority being women and children, are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance following recent inter-communal conflict in Ethiopia.
Displaced communities in Gedeo and West Guji are facing critical gaps in accessing basic services such as shelter, food and water, as the majority left their houses with close to nothing. Aid agencies warn that without a scale up of assistance, the situation of the IDPs is likely to further deteriorate.
As an emergency relief supplier, we are actively responding to the crisis through our ‘Rapid Response Strategy’ (RRS) approach, so that aid agencies and local authorities get the required relief goods for those in need. We are currently replenishing our emergency stock in Lahore, Pakistan, to ensure that we are ready to answer to immediate needs and we can respond to large demands within short periods of time.

Ethiopia situation overview
Since April 2018, continued insecurity and localized conflict between communities in Gedeo Zone (Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region – SNNPR) and Oromia Region of Ethiopia have led to the rapid displacement of nearly 970,000 people, according to a recent report by IOM. The displacement has caused loss of assets, disrupted livelihoods and basic services, and damaged infrastructure.
In early June, renewed inter-communal violence in Ethiopia has brought the number of IDPs in Gedeo to over 820,000, and nearly 150,000 in West Guji. These newly displaced are in addition to the 1.6 million Ethiopians elsewhere in the country that have been pushed from their homes by conflict or drought since last year. Many of these people are sheltering in schools or temporary facilities and are in need of immediate protection services and access to safe drinking water.
